Garage Heroes Review

Hundreds flocked to Brentwood Secondary College, Glen Waverley on Friday, 1 August to see local bands battle it out at the annual Monash FreeZA Battle of the Bands.

The event was organised by Quiksound Productions , a group of dedicated young people working under the banner of Monash Youth & Family Services. As part of the statewide FreeZA initiative, Quiksound Productions run youth events within the City of Monash.

The night saw Silver Stakes, The Splendours, The Ventions, Jessica-Jade Bruce, The Whole Molko, Farewell Alice, Three Last Words and The Quarters competing. Last year's champions, The Hestons, headlined the event.

After fierce competition and long deliberation between the judges, winners were announced, and taking out the night were The Quarters . For winning they receive a full days recording at Studio 52, and 2 free music lessons at Mr Music.

The Quarters are a local punk band, with a sound rivaling The Living End. There energetic set was a crowd pleaser which got everyone dancing, while also paying homage to ACDC by playing their classic, Jailbreak.

Lead singer and guitarist, Chris, said that winning their first battle came as a surprise to The Quarters. "We work hard cause we love music and playing, but we never thought it would've led to us winning tonight's battle."

Chris also thinks FreeZA's a great initiative, providing kids throughout Victoria with access to all-ages gigs.

The Quarters will now head to the Regional Finals, where they will battle it out with other FreeZA Battle of the Bands winners, for a chance to play at next year's Push Over Festival .

The sponsors of this event were FreeZA, Monash City Council, Monash Youth and Family Services, The Push, Studio 52, Mr Music, Boardworx, Syndal Music, Hurley, Beat, MP3.com.au, APRA, Dex Audio, Jack The Bear's, Hothouse, Cavalier, Cutting Edge Music and Orsino Images.
