Filmmaker Notes
‘Shades of My Shadow' was the first film made by RollPlay Productions. Back in mid October of 2002, original members of the film group began brainstorming ideas for their first project. The film was made for Youth Week 2003 and, due to its success, the film group has continued as a program at Monash Youth and Family Services.
The initial aims were to write a story that dealt with issues and problems relevant to youth, while entertaining the audience at the same time. Team members contributed to writing the script by creating situations that would reach young people in a way that they could identify with. ‘Shades of My Shadow' is a production by the youth, for the youth, with strong and positive messages about issues such as suicide, depression, self-esteem, and life for young people in general.
The story revolves around the lives of the three main characters, Bella, Bugs, and Kat, and the issues that they have to deal with. Each is haunted by ‘Shadow', who is a physical embodiment of their individual vulnerabilities and fears. The film follows the characters' struggles in making sense of the continual changes that are occurring in their lives. It is essentially the story of each character's journey to overcome obstacles and move forward in their lives.
Life has many twists and turns…
It's the roller coaster of existence we must ride every day…
…But is a dead end really a dead end?
…Is a clear signal as clear as it seems?
…and is a Shadow more than just a dark outline ?
