What is VOLuME?

VOLuME is the new committee responsible for exploring, planning and delivering the next community volunteer project. MYFS are now calling for young people aged 10-25 years who would like to be involved.

What will you get out of it?

As part of VOLuME you will:

• gain experience working within a team,
• develop skills in project management,
• learn about the needs in your community, and
• create new friendships.

These skills can be a valuable contribution to your resume and other future endeavours.
 

History

In celebration of National Youth Week 2011, a team of 60 young and energetic volunteers took on the challenge of painting an entire house in just one day. The recent heavy rain and floods had left a youth residential house in Monash in desperate need of some attention.

‘Paint your heart out!’ was developed by a committee of young people who wanted to complete a task ‘By Youth, For Youth’. They wanted to volunteer to help their community, learn new skills and meet like-minded people. With the support of MYFS and the Monash Volunteer Resource Centre, this idea became a reality.

On Saturday 9th April, the team set out armed with litres of paint, rollers, brushes and drop sheets to paint their hearts out for their community. The young team successfully completed the D.I.Y project in 8 hours, achieving not only the practical element of painting a house, but also a strong sense of community. This has left many Monash young people hungry to do more!

When and Where?

The committee will meet weekly on a Tuesday evening, from 5:30pm to 7:00pm during the school term at the Batesford Community Hub, 94 Batesford Road, Chadstone. Young people who live in the Ashwood and Chadstone area are strongly encouraged to apply, as are young people who live, study or work in the City of Monash.

There is no cost to be involved in the committee.

The project (that is decided by the committee) will be facilitated during the end of term school holidays.
