L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program

What is the L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program?

The L2P Program is for Learner Drivers aged 16-20 years old who face significant barriers to gain 120 mandatory driving experience required under Victoria’s Graduated Licence System, before applying for their probationary

licence.

The Southern Ethnic Advisory and Advocacy Council in partnership with the Cities of Monash and Kingston will coordinating the community based program. Within Monash and Kingston Local Government Areas there are a large number of young people who do not have access to to a vehicle or a licensed driver. There is also a significant number of youth from migrant and refugee backgrounds living in these municipalities who face additional barriers to attaining their drivers license.

The success of the program will depend heavily depend on volunteer involvement and community participation.

The Program

The L2P program will assist Learner Drivers under 21 years of age to be safer as novice solo driver’s and encourage inclusion of our disadvantaged youth in the community through relationship building with their volunteer ‘mentor driver’ support group. The L2P program will also promote and involve Monash, SEAAC and Kingston existing road safety programs that support young people.

How it works:

The Volunteer Mentors will be required to:

  • Register to the program,
  • Complete mandatory checks,
  • An interview and
  • VicRoads Training.

The Learner Driver will have up to 7 professional lessons throughout the mentoring program. This is to evaluate the driving of the Learner Driver before they are mentored by the volunteer.

The Learner Driver and Mentor will drive in a sponsored, fully maintained and serviced vehicle which has a minimum four star ANCAP safety rating, in the local council areas once a week. This will contribute to the accumulation of 120 hours of driving experience for the Learner Driver.
